북미지역(미국, 캐나다)에서 사용하는 국제표준 코드로 12자리 혹은 8자리로 구성된 표준형 (UPC-A)과 단축형(UPC-E)의 두 종류가 있습니다.

UPC-E는 EAN-8(단축형)처럼 별도의 독자적인 코드체계를 가지고 있는 것이 아니고 UPC-A(표준형)의 제조업체코드 형태에 따라 4가지 유형으로 분류할 수 있습니다. 
즉, UPC-A의 12자리중 넘버시스템캐릭터와 체크디지트를 제외한 제조업체코드 5자리와 상품품목코드 5자리중 4개의 0을 빼고 나머지 6자리를 UPC-E의 코드로 사용하며, 
UPC-A 의 넘버시스템캐릭터와 체크디지트를 그대로 UPC-E의 넘버시스템캐릭터와 체크디지트로 사용하여 전체 8자리의 UPC-E를 제작

EAN-13 and EAN-8  EAN(European Article Number) 
KAN(Korean Artlcle Number)
미국의 UPC 코드 제정 이후 유럽의 12 개국이 모여 국제적인 공통상품 코드를 제정했는데 이것이 바로 EAN(European Article Number)코드이다.
EAN 코드는 UPC 코드보다 상위 레벨의 코드로 EAN 코드를 판독할 수 있는 판독기는 UPC코드를 읽을 수 있으나 그 반대는 성립되지 않는다.
EAN 코드는 13 개의 문자를 포함 할 수 있는데 바코드로 표현되는 것은 12 자리 이고 맨 좌측의 문자는 수치로 표현되므로 UPC 와 동일한 심볼 길이인 95X를 갖는다.
EAN 코드의 종류에는 EAN-13, 즉 13개의 문자를 포함하는 표준형과 EAN-8인 8개의 문자를 포함하는 단축형이 있다.

KAN 은 한국공통상품 코드로 판매시점에 필요한 정보를 신속히 파악할 수 있는 POS 시스템이 보급되면서 
미국과 유럽에서 EAN 및 UPC 코드를 사용하고 가까운 일본에서도 EAN 에 가입하여 JAN 코드를 사용하고 있다.
KAN은 표준형 13자리와 단축형 8자리의 두 가지 가 있는데 
표준형 코드의 구성의 제조국가 코드 세 자리, 제조원, 개발원 코드 5자리, 상품 코드 5 자리, 체크 문자 한 자리로 구성
표준형 코드의 구성은 제조국코드 2자리, 제조원 코드 5자리, 상품코드 5자리, 체크 문자 한 자리로 구성된다.
EAN 및 JAN 은 두 자리의 숫자를 채택해 주로 국가 코드로 사용되고 우리 나라의 경우 EAN 으로부터 국가번호 코드로  880 부여받았다.

(A) The first 2 (sometimes 3) digits, which are called the “flag”, indicate in what country the bar code was issued. 
    This “flag” does NOT tell you, however, in what country the product was produced. In this case, the bar code was issued in the UK.     
(B) The next 5 digits indicate the supplier of the product.
(C) Another 5 digits indicate the product.
(D) The last digit is a check digit, which is used to make sure that the bar code reader at the checkout has read the product code correctly.

UPC-A and UPC-E UPC(Universal Product Code)
현재 미국이나 캐나다 등지에서 POS 용으로백화점이나 슈퍼마켓의 식료품과 일상 잡화 , 의료제품 등에 사용되고 있다.
UPC 코드는 12개의 캐릭터로 구성되어 숫자(0~9)만 표시가 가능하며 세가지 종류의 형이 있다.
Version A 는표준형으로 12자리를 표현하고, Version E는 단축형으로 6자리를, Version D는 확대형으로 표준형보다 많은 데이터를 표현할 수 있다.
UPC 코드느 좌측 여백과 좌측 가드패턴, 상품분류 체계번호, 제조업체 번호, 중앙 가드패턴, 상품번호,검사문자,우측 가드패턴, 우측 여백으로 구성 된다.
콰아어트 존이라 불리는 좌, 우측 여백은 좌측이 "X" 디멘전의 11배이상이고, 우측은 7배 이상이어야 하며, 마지막은 체크 디지트로 데이터의 잘못 여부를 확인하며 D/C 로 표시하기도 한다.
12자리의 구성
* 1자리 : 생산품목 분류(예:0-식료품, 2-고기,3-의료품) 
* 5자리 : 제조업체 코드 
* 5자리 : 상품명 코드 
* 1자리 : 체크디지트 
   


Code128
CODE 128은 전체 ASCII 128 문자를 모두 표현할 수 있는 연속형 심볼로지이며, 수치 데이터는 심볼 문자당 두 자리로 표현한다. 
The Code 128 barcode symbology is used to create GS1-128 (formerly UCC128 or EAN128) barcodes such as the GS1-128 symbols and data structure for SSCC18 and SCC14.

Interleaved 2 of 5 (ITF)   
Interleaved 2 of 5 (ITF) is a numeric only barcode used to encode pairs of numbers into a self-checking, high-density barcode format.

ITF-14   
ITF-14 is the GS1 System’s only use of Interleaved 2 of 5 and it is only used to encode the GTIN as a 14 digit number. It is commonly used on shipping boxes and containers.

Code-39 (3 of 9 Code) 
알파벳 문자를 코드화할 수 있는 것의 대표적인 3 of 9 코드는 CODE 39로도 알려져 있다
43개의 문자(0~9, A~Z,7개의 특수문자) 와 하나의 시작, 끝 문자로 구성되어 있으며 각 문자는 9개의 요소로 이루어지고 
그 중 세 개는 논리값 "1" 을 의미하며, 문자와 문자 사이의 갭은 코드값을 포함하지 않는다. 
현재 공업용을 비롯하여 가장 널리 사용되고 있으며 보통 바 5개가 한문자에 해당하며 시작과 끝문자는 반드시 "*" 이어야 한다.

- 바코드의 길이 변경 가능,최대 허용 길이는 스캐너의 특성에 의해 좌우된다
- 자기 진단 코드가 있다(Check Digit)
- 이산적이며 문자간 갭의 허용 오차가 적다
- 양쪽방향 래독이 가능한 양 방향성 코드이다
- 라벨의 길이는 넓은 범위에 걸쳐 변동이 가능하다

We get a lot of questions from clients about barcodes and if you can tell where something is manufactured.

Barcode prefixes do not provide identification of origin for a specific product. They merely provide number capacity to different countries for assignment of barcode prefixes by the GS1.

UPC  Barcodes do not show the leading zero. A UPC Barcode that starts with 7 would have a country code of 070 – 079.
